In the olden days, schools were all about going to class, listening to lectures, taking notes on notebook paper, and taking tests in test booklets. Well, times have definitely changed. Technology has completely overhauled how we go to school.

Technology in the Classroom

With today’s technology, things have changed completely. More and more things are being done electronically. Lecture notes from professors are posted on online blackboards, all information about the course is posted as well, notes are often taken on notebooks or tablet PCs, and lectures can be recorded on some smartphones. For that matter, if you wish to make use of the technology, many smartphones have the capability of video recording the lectures so you can watch them again later. Most assignments are turned in online, and the new excuse is “My Internet was down,” instead of, “My dog ate my homework.”

Classes Online

Another thing that technology has changed is the ability to attend classes online. In fact, it’s even possible to earn a bachelor degree at EarnMyDegree.com. Many colleges offer online bachelor degree programs and you can find out which ones are available through their sites. Taking classes online is so convenient. You don’t have to move anywhere to take the classes or worry about commute times. Many online programs provide useful tools such as the ability to hold study groups with other members of the class or to discuss topics related to the class with classmates.

Technology has definitely helped to make studying and going to college easier.

Mac fans are anxiously awaiting the unveiling of Apple’s latest product: the Mac OS X Lion Server. Here’s a brief sketch of what we know so far about Apple’s so-called “server for everyone.”

What is “Lion Server?”

Lion Server is separate from the operating system. If you’re a student with just a Macbook, it’s probably not something you’ll want to look into. If you’ve got several Macs and other Apple products (iPads, iPhones, etc.), you may want to do some research. Use Lion server to easily share files, email, calendars, contacts, Time Machine, etc. Basically, it’s a unified way to manage all of your Apple products.

How Much Will it Cost?

Mac OS X 10.7 (or Lion) will set you back around $30 at the App Store. Lion Server, priced as an add-on to the operating system, will run around $50. This should come as a shock to most Apple users used to paying $500 for previous servers.

Throw Away Your USB Cables…

…because iPad untethering is finally here. Wirelessly sync your iProducts with your computer through Lion Server.

Never Miss Another Appointment

No more comparing schedules with your spouse. Lion makes iCal easily shareable with your family members, so you can share to-do lists, events, or reminders. Two reminders about the upcoming cable bill are better than one, eh?

Overall, casual Mac users may want to hold off on Lion Server. Apple-loving families and diehard Mac users should definitely consider making the investment, especially considering the lower price tag and simple management process. Mac Lion Server will be available at the Mac App Store in July 2011.

Image via Wikipedia

Linux is a very efficient operating system used by thousands around the world. One of the best things about Linux and probably what helped to make it so popular is that it is free. So how does an operating system like Linux make any money for its developers if it doesn’t cost a cent to purchase?

Linux programmers and developers do not make any money from Linux itself. As Linux is available for free download via open source, they of course do not make any money from the profits from sales. Linux programmers usually make money by working for other companies who provide Linux related applications. These companies, such as Red Hat, provide Linux users with programs which have been specifically written to perform specific tasks using Linux as an operating system platform.

Basically the people who are helping to further develop Linux by writing code do so because it is something which they love to do. Those who collaborate and write code for Linux go into it knowing full well that they are doing so on the basis they are volunteering his or her time and knowledge. This is the main concept for anything that has been designed and made available through open source.

So the question, how does Linux make money can’t really be answered like most people want it to be. Those who are paid to write code for Linux related projects are few and far between, with most doing it for free out of his or her love for computers and coding, and to progress one of the most popular operating systems in the world today.

Electronic medical records, or EMRs, are an important step in modernizing our health care system. Transferring paper records to electronic ones has multiple benefits for both healthcare providers and patients. Here are some of the ways computerized medical records benefit patients.

Increased Communication in Emergencies or Transfers

Let’s say you’re on vacation and you need urgent healthcare. A doctor can easily receive your electronic medical records and treat you more quickly than having you fill out your entire history. Most patients can’t remember their entire medical history. Think about it: can you really remember exactly what vaccinations you received and when you received them? Additionally, if a patient is severely injured or unconscious, they’ll be unable to provide medical records.

Decreased Wait Time

Computerized medical records save time for both healthcare providers and patients. This means less time sitting in an office waiting room, filling out endless forms and waiting for the staff to process the information you’ve provided. Electronic information is much more navigable than paper records. For example, a doctor can quickly see if there’s a history of breast cancer in your family or if you’ve had trouble with high cholesterol. This means less flipping through records for him and less wait time for you.

Superior Care

Doctors have long recognized the benefits of having a computerized record system, and the idea of electronic records has been around for a long time. There’s no chance of tangible destruction with computerized records; while paper records can be destroyed by fire or water damage, computerized medical records are stored in a secure, confidential location with backups. Electronic medical records are the future of medical care.

An operating system is software that is required in order to manage and execute programs and data. It also allows hardware to function by maintaining communication between the installed hardware and programs, and is found on any electronic item that houses a computer. The operating systems which usually come standard on personal computers are Mac OS X, Unix, Microsoft Windows, and Linux. There are approximately seven types of operating systems: real-time, multi-user, single-user, single-tasking, multi-tasking, embedded, and distributed, and each type offers specific benefits based on the usage and functionality of the computer.

The first computers were only able to perform single tasks, similar to the function of a calculator. As personal computers, created by companies such as Apple and IBM, began to appear within the home in the 1980s, software companies began creating operating systems in order to run several programs at once. An operating system is a complex piece of software that allows processes to occur properly. Its functions are to control how memory is used, as well as control how the devices which are linked to the computer perform. The operating system also manages how much memory is available, to ensure that programs can run smoothly without interruption due to lack of memory.

The user interface aspect controls the way the user can interact with the computer. Images and icons are used to allow the user to understand what needs to be done. The operating system can then interpret the message from the user and communicate that information to the computer in order to process the command correctly. Having an effective operating system is key to a smooth process on the computer.

If, like many, you are tired of having a television that takes up half your room, and if your images lack luster, then you might want to consider switching to a HDTV. The high-definition television, with either an LCD screen or a plasma screen, is increasing in popularity thanks to its clear images, optimal sound, and visual perks. Call some friends over for an evening of great visual and audio entertainment.

Most films on the market today are designed for high quality TVs. When you pop one in or select a download, you can choose your favorite settings, whether you prefer to watch full screen or widescreen motion pictures. Movies with loud booms and flashes are particularly exciting with the sharp visuals and surround sound that come with many HDTVs. Ready for a night with the guys? Invite them over to watch a pay-per-view fight on your HDTV.

When you are relaxing with your family, you might find that you have different viewing styles. Do you like to check tomorrow’s weather while watching tonight’s game? Or scan the news ticker while watching a film? That’s no problem with an HDTV. The flat screens are perfect for multiple show viewing. Since HDTVs come in many sizes, you are bound to find the perfect one for your living quarters. LCD and plasma high-definition televisions are so slim, they won’t invade your space even in a small apartment. This also makes them easy to clean. The flat screens enhance viewing from multiple angles, even if you are across the room diagonally.

The benefit of open source software such as Xvid is that it is being improved and updated on a consistent basis. Xvid, a free software distributed under the GNU public license, features lumi masking, b-frames, trellis quantization, as well as global and quarter pixel compensation and much more. Xvid takes away some of the information that is deemed not necessary so that it can always achieve high compression rates. Xvid capabilities can compress video ratios of 200 to 1, if not more, depending on your systems capabilities.

Xvid uses many technologies as an implementation of video compression technology, commonly known as MPEG-2. This can be copied onto a CD or a DVD, although some set-top players do not support this software. So choose your player carefully, or download the audio and video player with the free program. Xvid is always secure to use and open sourced, meaning faster and more reliable file sharing and downloads.

Although Xvid was developed for use on a PC, it has recently been developed to work with Mac and iMac, as well as Linux. Xvid is currently working on a better Quicktime, which in time will become part of the core code base. So look out for improvements on a common basis.

There is no spyware or adware included in the Xvid program. Anyone can check for instability by reviewing the Xvid source code. This makes using Xvid, safe, easy, and effective to use. Xvid also offers the best in quality and effectiveness, quite comparable (if not surpassing) some of the expensive programs on the market. This makes Xvid top of the line when it comes to open source file sharing
